before + after: our bathroom reveal

Before and After DIY Modern Bathroom Renovation

One of the first projects we tackled upon moving into our house was the upstairs bathroom. When we moved in, it boasted a nautical theme with baby blue beadboard wainscot paneling and heavy drapes. It was the farthest thing from our style. Plus, this is one of the most light-filled rooms in our house, so we wanted to take advantage of the flexibility to do something creative with paint colors. We are so happy with the results. Check out the full before and after bathroom reveal after the jump!

Since our bathroom ceilings are high, and we get a decent amount of natural light, we were dying to try a two-tone dark and light look. Benjamin Moore's Soot on the walls and Simply White on the beadboard was the perfect combination and we were instantly in love. We used Aura Bath & Spa paint products for both the walls and panel to protect against moisture.

As accents, I snagged a few glass terrariums and air plants and hung them in front of the windows with fishing line. We've had these air plants in the bathroom for almost a year now and they are doing perfectly and love the diffused light. For care, we soak them in water every few weeks. To play into the white and wood look, I paired Nate Berkus Chilli bath towels with wooden frames featuring photographs of the desert.

I always want to let in as much natural light as possible, so I try to avoid window coverings, but sometimes, like with bathrooms, window coverings aren't optional. So I tried IKEA Schottis pleated shades at $2.99 a pop and figured I would need to replace them in a week, but just like the air plants, they are holding strong and look great.

  1. Wondering if the floor is wood or tile?

  2. @Alison The floors are a light (almost white) wood laminate. They've held up pretty well thus far, but we've been thinking about replacing it with tile to hold up against water.
